How to Smudge? How to make your own smudge stick? Precautions for smudging?

September 4, 2011  |  Smudging  |  41 comments

A smudge as we all know by now is a bundle of magical herbs which is burnt and smoke of which is used to purify places, souls, as well as people. It also develops a energy field around a territory and an individual. The process of smudging can be done for both oneself and others.

Smudging is very popular among the Wiccans in the North American territory. It is a crossover practice in the territory which has been a tradition adopted from the Native American Spirituality. Although Smudging is basically burning of special herbs as a part of ritual processes its a purifying process in nature. The purifying nature has hardly any side effect on the people around it. It therefore is non allergic in nature. However many chemical scents have come up in the markets today and the use of which needs to be avoided. Some of the artificial fragrances available in the market is known to cause serious diseases such as cancer or nerve disorders.

So what’s the procedure for making a smudge stick?

One can buy any premade smudge sticks which includes numerous plants in it. The popular smudges available are sage smudges, and some combinations of things such as sage, lavender, and cedar.

Not in case you want to make it by yourself following the steps below might help you:

Use of harvesting plants

The process needs to be conducted with the right set of knowledge and awareness. One should be sure about their intent and what is the reason they want to smudge for?

One should work along the cycles as each harvesting plant has its own harvesting time. It may be dawn or the night time, Dark Moon or the Full Moon. Thus it is necessary to plant the appropriate plants at their specified time.

The best practice to find the best plant to harvest would be leaving the first plant one sees. The time when a person is harvesting a plant for the purpose of smudging or spirituality or ritual purposes the best way would be ask the plant’s willingness and leave that thanks with an offering.

Moreover this is important for each item that is found in nature that one wishes to use for the purpose of ritual practices. In case one uses an item and does not show respect to it the spirit of the plant gets harmed and resentful. Therefore bringing any such energy for your surroundings is detrimental for ones purpose.

Hence while choosing a herb it should be based in the qualities they have or invoke. For example a sage smudge can clear out negative energies.

Binding of Herbs

Creation of a smudge stick is sorted as a ritual in its own. After harvesting the herbs in a sacred manner then next step is proceeding with the wrapping process.

In order to do so one needs to gather all the materials required for the purpose of sage in a sacred place. Besides the herbs one needs to have scissors and a few threads for wrapping. For many it may seem to be a messy process so one would like to have a sheet or something beneath them while sitting for making the process of cleaning up much easier.

Highly recommended for the thread selection is the natural embroidery or quilting threads as they are thicker. If one takes a thin thread like the sewing threads then they can cut into the herbs rather than binding them to burn easily.

One should also have a sheet made out of cotton, hemp, linen or any other similar material. They should also be uncoloured by the use of dyes. The reason behind this is that people would be burning this and inhaling it so it should be such that it does not pollute the environment. Also it would pollute the energy and your sacred body with polyester or chemical constituents.

In case you get a dyed and natural plant colouring they go for a thread based depending on which colour would be best for the task. For example wrap the herbs with a green grass thread when carrying out the process for health benefits. The moment one wraps the smudge stick one needs to be aware of what energy they are collecting into that. After all it’s a thread that is binding the magic inside the whole bundle. With all respect one should feel the gratitude of the gift which the plant and the Mother Nature have given us. After the bundling task is done its the time to offer prayers and say a blessing as a dedication for the cause the smudging process has been carried out for.

Many people also use the seashells in order to smudge but it is highly recommended of not using it for the said process of smudging. Especially the Abalone shells should never be used. In the markets smudge sticks are often sold along with these Abalone shells for some bizarre reasons. However it is absolutely inappropriate for using that for smudging purposes.

The primary reason for this is that shells are not fire-safe. Moreover another important reason is that Abalone is a sacred item for the Gods and Goddesses. Also these shells are affiliated to water so it’s highly preferred not to disrespect them by putting into fire. And this applies for each and every shell and not only Abalone.

Almost all the religious and spiritual traditions around the world practice burning herbs. Smudge sticks are native to the Americans. These sticks are made of different kinds of herbs. It is said that burning these herbs helps in purifying a person, place, or an object. It can heal the emotional and psychic parts in humans through spiritual purification. The Native Americans mainly use the smudge sticks to cleanse a person, place, or any object. It is said that these sticks help in removing the negative energy and brings positive energy. Smudge sticks can be used for following purposes:

  • You’ve been feeling depressed, angry, resentful.
  • You’ve had an argument with someone.
  • You’re going to have a special ritual or ceremony.
  • As part of a general spiritual housecleaning.
  • To clear your crystals of any negative energy.

The smudge sticks are considered to be sacred in Native societies, as they are made of special herbs. The smudge stick should be given due respect as they are used for the respectful act of smudging and spiritual cleaning. It is particularly centering to have an intention in mind. For example: if someone is stressed then he should visualize that the smoke is carrying away all the feelings of depression and if there is an argument with a person then we should visualize the person with whom we argued and being in with peace with him.

One must always remember to thank the crystal and the smudge stick for helping him in realising his goals. While smudging a house or a room people should think that their home is like temple for the body.

Smudge sticks can be lit with flame of a candle. Once there is a flame then we should blow it away so that smudge stick just smoulders and not burns away. The main idea is to get smoke and not burn the smudge stick or set it on fire.

If someone is smudging an object then he can hold it in the smoke and if they are smudging more than one object then they should fan the smoke on the objects. The room should be smudged by walking around the perimeter of the room and special attention should be given to the corners of the room. One can also fan the smoke in the room with the help of large feathers. If a person is being smudged then we should fan the smoke over the person properly and make sure that it touches the whole body. People should specially focus on the areas where they think there is some kind of blockage. It helps in healing spiritual, emotional, and psychic pain.

We should always have a fire proof receptacle to put the smudge stick in them when we are finished. It is ideal to put the stick in sand or use small amount of water. We should always keep in mind that the smudge stick is out of the room before we leave the room.

Smudging Ceremony

July 24, 2011  |  Smudging  |  36 comments

Smudging is defined as the process of cleansing and purifying the mind body and soul of the person by the burning of herbs and essential oils. The process however, cannot be restricted to a person alone. It can be generalized to purification of an object room or a place from all kinds of negative energies, impurities, spirits and influences that render it to be unhealthy and uncomfortable. The ceremony of smudging, as they call it, involves blazing of certain sacredly important plants and resins that are herbal in nature and then fanning the smoke of such burnt plants and herbs around the person, object or place that is being subjected to smudging. It is believed that doing this purifies everything, the mind body soul and the surroundings along.

The smudging ceremony can be performed in 2 different ways. The easiest way is to just make use of a smudge stick,  which is an easy to use stick prepared out of leaves of the plants that are tied together and made to dry. The stick is used by putting it aflame and then extinguishing it so that just the smoke comes out regularly, almost like the incense sticks that are used. The wand or the stick is then circled around the person being smudged so that the entire aura around him becomes pure and free from all evils. One should note that playing the stick around the heart provides best results in the therapy. While smudging for the purpose of cleansing a room, it is a good idea to make circular movements of the burnt stick in each room after every few steps as this would ensure that the entire smoke has penetrated to every nook and corner of the room and hence the house also.

The second smudging process is a bit more of a hassle but then it is equally more effective. The incense charcoal is used to begin the smudging ceremony. The lighted charcoal is then put inside a container that is heat proof. The smudging herbs are then sprinkled on top of the charcoal placed inside the container and the smoke released thereof is fanned towards the object or person that is being subjected to the smudging ceremony.

It is to be taken special care of that the smudging activity involves prayers where one asks the spirits of the herbs to help you with the healing and purification process and such prayer must be done with proper care and caution.

A few plants that can be used in the smudging process include Desert Sage , that helps in clearing off the negative spirits and influences, Cedar, that eliminates all kinds of negative emotions, Sweetgrass, that brings along with itself only positive energies and is rendered to be one of the most powerful herbs, White Sage, that is well known for its pleasant aroma, and many more.

So we realize that smudging is one of the best methods that can be used in any kind of activity that involves the enlightenment of the spirit of self, be it meditation, reiki or simply daily prayers.

Smudging With Sage

Burning sage has been a common practise among all the spiritual groups, healing and many religious groups. The word sage has derived its name from the Latin word salvare. Literally salvare means “to heal.” Sage has been used in smudging ceremonies from many years. It helps in promoting protection, Purification, Immortality and longevity. White sage grows around the coastal areas of Southern California.

The ritual of smudging has been used from many years and it is defined as “spiritual house cleaning.” The smoke which generates from smudging attaches to the negative energy and takes it away. When the smoke clears the negative energy and removes it from the place then it regenerates some positive energy and cleanses the place. There have been studies that have proved that the smoke which is released by burning sage changes the ionization polarity of air around us.

Smudging with sage can help to cleanse almost anything for example living space, personal items and also our body. Smudging ceremonies start by lighting smudge stick. Once they are burned one must wave around them to extinguish the flame. Then one should gather the smoke which comes out and draw it around the perimeter of the body. If one wants to direct the smoke towards any object or any person then he could simply blow the glowing embers or simply use the ceremonial feather to fan the ember towards that direction. When one is dealing with and individual spirit or an individual body then he should pay special attention to the areas of unbalance and area of stress.

If a person is smudging in a living environment then he should start from the doorway. Then he should start smudging in a clockwise direction. People must cleanse everything including the walls, door frame, and the windows. Proper attention should be paid to the corners and the top of the walls. After we purify and cleanse our body and our rooms with sage and properties of sage, a new space is created for awareness and also new direction to take its place.

There are many different varieties of sage and most of them are used for smudging. The botanical name of true sage is salvia and the interesting thing about it is that salvia comes from a Latin word “salvare” which means “to heal.” Some of the other varieties of sage are Salvin Artemusia, Sage brush and mugwort. Burning sage always helps in driving bad spirits away and also doesn’t allow any spirit or bad influence to enter the area. In plains the floor of the sweat lodge is covered with sage and the smudging ceremony takes place there. Sage is also spread on the ground in a lodge or on an altar where the pipe touches the earth. Sage purifies the objects wrapped in it, so many nations wrap their pipes in sage. Sage wreath is also placed around the wrists and heads of sun dancers. Sometimes one person smudges or many people smudge using hands or feathers. One must always keep praying that the unseen powers of the plant will cleanse their spirit.

Helping You Cleanse Your House Through Smudging

July 12, 2011  |  Smudging  |  57 comments

Burning herbs and other plant materials has been a regular practice ever since fire was invented. Smudging is practiced to bring a change in the energies that surround us. This process can be practised on a person, smudging your house, or any other object. It also brings a change in the environment by cleansing it and makes the place smell good. It is not exactly known for how long this process has been there, but pretty much since the dawn of mankind.

Many people ask the question that why smudging is required. The simple reason for smudging is that it helps us remove all the negative energy around us and brings in the positive energy. Smudge Away The Negative Energy

July 11, 2011  |  Smudging  |  259 comments

Taking the help of Smudge to drive away spirits and negative energies is the most powerful and simple way. There are different herbs and plants that can be used in Smudging. Some of them are cedar, sage, lavender and some other herbs. The sage herb comes in many different forms but the white is considered to be better than the green garden sage.

The Smudging process involves burning dried plants and fanning the smoke over the body with some sacred intention. We should also smudge the area where we intend to carry out our sacred work. Smudging is mainly followed in Native America but it is also found in other cultures as well.

Smudge comes in many different forms. The most common form is the bundle or the loose leaf white sage. Many people burn the sage herb in a shell. But it is considered better not to use shells as burning some god’s creature in a shell does look good. It is better to use a piece of pottery or censer instead of shell. Different bundles of sage come in different forms, some are found mixed together. The bundle form is not considered good as it also contains sweet grass. Sweet grass is a nest builder and it gives the spirits a nest to live in. If the area is not cleared properly and any negative energy remains then it may build a nest too. If someone uses a sweet grass then it is better if they first cleanse the area with a white sage and then use sweet grass.

Driving The Spirits Away Through Smudging Ceremonies

July 11, 2011  |  Smudging  |  134 comments

The process of Smudging ceremony aims at cleaning a place, person, or any object from negative energies. Smudging ceremony involves herbal resins or special sacred plants. The plants are burnt while the ritual is carried out. Then an object is passed around a resulting smoke. It may also involve fanning smoke around a place or a person. The spirit present in the plant purifies all the things which are smudged.

Smudging ceremonies are carried out in two ways. The simplest method is to smudge by using a smudge stick. A smudge stick is generally a wand which contains leaves of different plants or of one plant which are dried and tied together. To use the wand one just has to burn the end of the wand and then extinguish its flame once it has a smoldering effect. While carrying on the smudging ceremony we should make the person who is being smudged stand in front of us. Then we should move the smudge stick around him. We should move the wand around the person’s aura starting from the feet and then move upwards. When the smudge stick reaches their head we must make them turn clockwise and pass the stick down their back. Sometimes concentrating around the heart area also pays off.

While cleansing a room or a house the smudge stick must be moved around the area clockwise. People must make sure that the corners of the room and the place behind the door is properly smudged. Another way of smudging is by using a self igniting or incense charcoal for heating. Burn the charcoal and keep it in a heat proof container. Then sprinkle half teaspoon of smudging herb in the charcoal and then fan its smoke around the object that is being smudged.
